Work Based Learning

Career Pathways

The Southwest Colorado Education Collaborative (SWCEC) focuses on a variety of career pathways informed by regional workforce demands. Each pathway highlights programs offered by regional high school and college partners. SWCEC prepares students for future careers through Work-Based Learning activities, such as guest speaker sessions, job and college fairs, hands-on experiences at job sites, and internships with industry partners.

By participating in these pathways, students gain the knowledge and skills necessary to secure family-sustaining wages in their chosen fields.

Shared Equipment

&

Mobile Learning

The Collaborative helps schools access hands-on learning opportunities through shared equipment and mobile learning labs. Rather than requiring every school to have the resources and equipment needed for career exploration, we help bring those resources to where students are.

Our Equipment Library provides educators with access to tools and equipment that can be used for classroom projects, career exploration, and hands-on learning. Mobile learning labs extend that model by bringing specialized equipment, activities, and learning experiences directly into schools and communities.

Together, these resources help educators create more engaging, hands-on experiences while expanding access to career-connected learning across Southwest Colorado.

Summer Institutes

SWCEC organizes summer institutes that connect students with industry experts for immersive career exploration.

Futures Fairs

The Futures Fair connects middle and high school students with local employers, higher education institutions, and training providers to explore the many pathways available after graduation. The event is designed to help students discover careers, understand the skills needed in today’s workforce, and see how their interests can translate into real opportunities in our region.

At the Futures Fair, students engage directly with industry professionals and colleges through hands-on activities, conversations, and demonstrations. Rather than focusing on a single postsecondary option, the fair highlights a wide range of pathways, including careers in the trades, healthcare, hospitality, agriculture, technology, and more, alongside college and training programs that support those careers.

By bringing education and industry together in one space, the Futures Fair helps students build awareness, confidence, and clarity about their next steps while strengthening connections between schools and the regional workforce.

Career Days

Career Days offer students an in-depth, hands-on experience that goes beyond a traditional job shadow. These interactive days are designed to immerse students in real workplace environments, giving them meaningful exposure to careers through active participation, problem-solving, and direct engagement with industry professionals.

During a Career Day, students rotate through activities, demonstrations, and guided experiences that reflect the day-to-day work of a specific industry or career pathway. Students may use tools, practice technical skills, explore worksites, and learn how classroom learning connects to real-world applications. Just as importantly, they have opportunities to ask questions, hear personal career stories, and better understand the education, training, and skills required for success in the field.

Career Days help students build confidence, clarify interests, and develop a deeper understanding of career pathways available in Southwest Colorado, while strengthening connections between schools and local employers.

Supporting Educators

The Collaborative supports educators by creating opportunities to collaborate, access shared resources, and bring meaningful career-connected learning experiences into their classrooms. We work alongside educators to build their capacity to connect students with real-world learning and opportunities.

Professional Learning Communities

Our Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) bring educators together to learn, collaborate, and solve challenges together. PLCs provide a space for educators across the region to share ideas, explore effective practices, develop partnerships, and strengthen career-connected learning in their schools.

Through these communities, educators can:

  • Learn from and support one another

  • Share resources, ideas, and promising practices

  • Explore new approaches to work-based learning and career pathways

  • Connect with industry and community partners

  • Collaboratively develop solutions to challenges facing rural schools
